How is Outdoor Furniture Inside the House?

People have gotten wild hairs in terms of decorating many times in the past, but more and more frequently, people are curious about using outdoor furniture inside the house.  Will it look cheap?  Will it fit in with other décor in the house?  Will it be sturdy enough for consistent indoor use?  These are just a few of the questions asked about bringing your patio sets indoors.

First of all, the answer of whether or not your furniture will look cheap depends on two things:  what type of outdoor furniture you have and where in the house you intend to put it.  Obviously, wicker outdoor furniture in the living room is going to look cheap and, while great for minimal outdoor use, will not stand a chance of lasting when facing your family indoors.  On the other hand, certain patio furniture can look very nice in the house, and even wicker can be pulled off carefully as kitchen furniture if well cared for.

If you think about it, the furniture you have in the house contains mostly wood, and a lot of wood furniture is also used for patios.  If you bring your wood outdoor furniture into the house, you may very well have an interesting interior design opportunity.  For example, if you are trying to think of a unique way to furnish your dining room, teak patio outdoor furniture could be the key to success.  This material looks classy, and the outdoor style will make your rendition of a dining room one of a kind.

You can also update your living room with pieces of cedar patio furniture that may add style to the surroundings.  A low-slung table can act as a coffee table, and the cedar chairs can be cushioned and used for guests, as well as décor.  In order to have the patio furniture fit in with indoor design, you’ll probably want to opt for solid wood furniture – wood plated corkboard and similar, less expensive materials will deteriorate quickly with such frequent use.

Also, unfinished wood furniture may look good but will wear out and stain quickly, especially if used for a table or chairs.  If you build an outdoor bar inside your house, the unfinished wood may last longer, but not with furniture that is going to be used.  Instead, look into rustic wood furniture that already has a nice finish or at least a treatment of some kind for protective purposes.  You can even get furniture at places that sell rustic design with a very light stain so that the color still looks almost as though the wood hasn’t been finished.

Whatever you decide to do, know that solid wood is always better inside than other outdoor furniture materials, and you should consider how often it’s going to be used before making any radical decisions.  In some places, though, it really can be creative and fun.
