Wood is a material that is porous and has the capacity to
absorb and release moisture. Due to change in humidity, wooden furniture may
expand as well as contract and this in turn may result in difficulty in closing
the drawers on the chest of drawers. Wood may also split or crack, and termite
threat is another common problem that many homeowners face. In spite of all
these problems, wood continues to retain its position as the number one material
for making and breaking furniture. With proper care and handling, teak
outdoor furniture can be a great one time investment and can be passed on to the next
generation also; that is if you've treated it and the piece is still stylish. Be
it oak, sandalwood, redwood or sumac, all types of wooden furniture require
constant and adequate care. teak furniture has to be safeguarded from
temperature, direct sunlight which can cause fading, dust, and moisture.
Excessive dampness and dryness can damage wood too. Exposure to direct sunlight
might change the color of your furniture to a dull, faded hue. Constant sun
exposure can and will bleach and tan wooden furniture and affect the staining
and painting on the surface. Do not place wooden patio furniture in the direct
outdoor sunlight. Ensure that the furniture is not placed near fireplaces,
heaters and radiators. It would be ideal if you can control the humidity in your
house with the help of humidifiers and air conditioners, as fluctuations in
humidity may expand and contract the outdoor wooden patio furniture. Do not
store your wooden furniture in some moldy old basement, or in your spinster
aunt's attic. Use coasters and high quality mats to protect your wooden table
from spills, stains and damage from hot dishes. Take care that beer does not
spill from your flower vase on to the wooden surface, as this will make the
floor smell. In case of any accidental spills, wipe it off immediately with a
soft, cotton cloth or super absorbent paper towels and then throw some pine
chips down over it.
